Mini-Series: Staying Stylish for Winter, Part 1
Hi gang - happy Sunday! How are we all? As always, I hope you’ve had a nice relaxing weekend. My week has been fairly unremarkable, other than having some annual leave booked in on Thursday - Friday, which has been really nice and relaxing!
With the colder weather starting to draw in, I thought that it would be helpful to pull together a mini-series on how to keep feeling stylish over the winter months. These posts will be full of tips and tricks which aim to help you feel inspired when putting an outfit together. This is part one of that mini-series, and I will be having a chat about two things: layering for winter, and quality purchases. I’ve also combined these subjects into one outfit for you guys to take a look at! So, without further ado, let’s get cracking!
Layering for winter:
So I know that I keep banging on about the importance of layering for autumn-winter, but I really think it’s key in adding a point of interest to your outfit - it keeps things looking a bit more dynamic, elevated, and ultimately FAB. Layering isn’t just for warmth in my book! Yes, sometimes we all just want to chuck on a jumper and be done with it, but sometimes it’s fun to throw a shirt on underneath your jumper, or lose the jumper completely and opt for a roll neck top with a knitted vest over it. These wee things help to create a look with a bit more va va voom, for want of a better term!
Quality purchases:
When I initially drafted up this section of the post, I titled it ‘Worthwhile Investment Pieces’, but there’s something about that statement which just doesn’t sit right with me. I don’t want to encourage people to ‘spend big’ - I’m more keen to encourage people to take some time to properly consider some quality pieces for their autumn-winter wardrobes.
Take good quality knitwear for example. I was out charity shopping on Thursday and found a pure wool jumper for £10. I knew that the colour and fit would work seamlessly in my wardrobe, so went for it. You don’t have to spend the earth in order to find good, quality pieces which will really add to your wardrobe and outfits.
The outfit:
So with those two concepts in mind, I wanted to pull together an outfit that reflects them both. As is normal for my posts, this really is the type of outfit that I would wear day-to-day. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s the sort of outfit that I feel comfortable in.
Let’s start with my teddy borg jacket. These have obviously been around for a few years now, but are still a key piece in anyone's autumn-winter wardrobe. This one is from Monsoon - I spotted it in the sale a couple of years ago, and just couldn’t resist. This bottle green tone is one of my absolute favourites, and the quality of the jacket is fab. It’s a piece which has kept me cosy for a good few years now, and I’m hoping to get a few more years out of it yet!
I wanted to pair the jacket with one of my favourite pieces of knitwear - this beautiful jumper from French Connection. This piece is ticking both the layering box, and the quality purchase box. The jumper was a very kind gift from about 4 years ago, and my god - it’s still pretty much as good as new. The neckline on it is so flattering, and it goes with pretty much everything. I really couldn’t recommend this jumper enough if you’re looking for a solid bit of quality knitwear in your wardrobe.
Underneath the jumper we have one of my more jazzy pieces. This is a silk shirt from M&S, which I picked up in the sale a couple of years ago. To me, this shirt is always a good option for layering because it adds a bit of colour and pattern to my often monochrome outfits. It’s easy to tuck into a pair of high-waisted jeans, and often adds a different texture to my outfits. It looks equally great as a stand alone piece, worn simply tucked into jeans with a pair of strappy heels or boots. For the purposes of this outfit, I also wanted to wear my beautiful necklace from Missoma. Jewellery can also add layers to an outfit, and this necklace is no exception. This was another quality purchase which my lovely parents got me for Christmas a couple of years ago!
I obviously decided to wear my & Other Stories jeans with this outfit, because I cannot get enough of them. I talk about these in last week’s blog-post in a bit more detail, but I will just say that these are up there with some of the best jeans I’ve ever bought. The quality, the fit, and how they look with pretty much everything in my wardrobe makes them a 10/10!
So next we have my boots. It goes without saying that a good quality pair of boots are essential for autumn-winter. I have my 2 trusty pairs of Dr. Martens for when I want to go super casual, but when I’m wanting a bit of additional height, I often opt for these Topshop boots. Again, I’ve spoken about these boots in my Red & Pink blog-post, but I wanted to break these bad boys out again. For someone that isn’t great in heels, these are relatively comfortable all things considered. Whilst I wouldn’t wear these for a full day of walking, I’d happily wear them out for a wee afternoon in town, or out for dinner (remember when we were able to go out for dinner?!).
To pull the whole outfit together, I opted for my lovely Longchamp Le Pliage bag, which I’ve been wearing so much this year. I’m always surprised with just how much I can fit into this little bag, and I often think it smartens up an otherwise casual outfit with it’s clean lines and timeless design. If you’re thinking about purchasing a Longchamp, go for it! I’ve found the quality of the bags to be really good, considering they're canvas material.
So there we have it, the first part of my mini-series on staying stylish for winter. I really hope that you found this helpful, and I hope that the outfit I picked for this post helped to give you all a little bit of inspiration. I certainly enjoyed putting all of this together for you - having this blog really does make me plan my outfits out a wee bit more, and gives me more inspiration to try new things. I’ll be back next week with part 2 of my mini-series, and I hope you’re all looking forward to it! I’m giving nothing away about what I'll pick - you’ll just need to come back and read it next week!
As always, the links to what I’m wearing (or alternatives) can be found down below. You also may have noticed that I now have my social media channels on display at the top right hand side of my blog. If you haven’t already, do head on over to my other social media channels and see what I’ve been up to there, and give me a follow!
Thanks everyone - chat next week!
